Part of the Honolulu African American Film Festival: Black History Month.

Directed by Dee Rees. 2017. USA. 134 min.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see filmmaker Dee Rees’ Golden Globe-nominated saga of two families in the Mississippi Delta on the big screen. The New York Times’ A. O. Scott calls it “a work of historical imagination that lands in the present with disquieting, illuminating force.”

Laura McAllan (Carey Mulligan) is trying to raise her children on her husband's hardscrabble farm, a place she finds foreign and frightening. In the midst of the family's struggles, two men return from World War II to work the land. Jamie McAllan, Laura's brother-in-law, is everything her husband is not—charming and handsome, but he is haunted by his memories of combat. Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell) is the eldest son of the black tenant farmers (Rob Morgan and Mary J. Blige) who live on the McAllan farm, who as a tank commander in France experienced equality and warmth, now battles prejudice in the Jim Crow South. Both men struggle to adjust to life after war and wrangle with a deep-seated, raging racism that leads to a shocking climax.
