Laura McAllan (Carey Mulligan) is trying to raise her children on her husband's hardscrabble farm, a place she finds foreign and frightening. In the midst of the family's struggles, two men return from World War II to work the land. Jamie McAllan, Laura's brother-in-law, is everything her husband is not—charming and handsome, but he is haunted by his memories of combat. Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell) is the eldest son of the black tenant farmers (Rob Morgan and Mary J. Blige) who live on the McAllan farm, who as a tank commander in France experienced equality and warmth, now battles prejudice in the Jim Crow South. Both men struggle to adjust to life after war and wrangle with a deep-seated, raging racism that leads to a shocking climax.
